RNC platform takes hard line on immigration
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Drafters of the Republican National Committee platform are taking a hard line on immigration, calling for an end to so-called sanctuary cities and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants at public universities.
Republicans meeting in Tampa, Fla., this week have adopted a series of amendments to the party's platform that also call for the federal government to complete a fence along the border with Mexico and require all U.S. businesses to use the government's E-Verify program to ensure that no illegal immigrants are hired.
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is an informal adviser to Mitt Romney on immigration, proposed the amendments. They mirror the party's 2008 platform. The amendments received broad support from delegates on the party's platform committee.

Schylling Toy Review!
Recently i was given the opportunity to review 3 Curious George toys from Schylling and i am pleased to say they have brought hours of play and fun. Schylling Toys is located in Massachusetts and so am i! So i thought it was pretty cool to work with a local company.
First we reviewed the Curious George Peg Puzzle; My daughter enjoys sitting and doing puzzles and she got a hang of this one right away! Wooden puzzles are my favorite because they are so durable and can tolerate anything a toddler does to it. They are great to pass down too since they last so long. Check out the puzzle!
As you can see its cute! My daughter loves animals and this is great for teaching them about the circus and naming the animals.

The Tin Tea Set is adorable and durable! I loved the little cups and saucers. The Tea Pot was realistic and had a cute little cover. I loved the tray the set came with my daughter enjoyed carrying it around with her new tea set. Now for Tea Time with Curious George!

The Sun to defy royal family to print Harry nude snaps
The Sun, Rupert Murdoch's popular British tabloid, on Friday published nude photographs of Prince Harry despite being asked not to by the royal family.
A picture of the nude Prince appeared on the front of Friday's edition next to the headline "Heir it is".
British newspapers had previously refrained from running the grainy snaps showing the third in line to the throne cavorting naked with friends in a Las Vegas hotel suite, but the top-selling tabloid said its readers had a "right to see them".
"The Sun is publishing the naked Prince Harry party pictures our readers have been prevented from seeing in print," it said in a statement.
"He often sails close to the wind for a royal -- but he's 27, single and a soldier.
"We like him. We are publishing the photos because we think Sun readers have a right to see them. The reasons for that go beyond this one story," it added.
Royal officials contacted the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) media watchdog to try and prevent publication, arguing it would breach his privacy, but the pictures have been widely seen on the Internet.
A St James's Palace spokesman said later: "We have made our views on Prince Harry's privacy known. Newspapers regulate themselves, so the publication of the photographs is ultimately a decision for editors to make."
Sun managing editor David Dinsmore said the paper had "thought long and hard" about whether to run the shots.
"We are not against him (Harry) letting his hair down once in a while. For us this is about the freedom of the press.
"This is about the ludicrous situation where a picture can be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world on the Internet, but can't be seen in the nation's favourite paper read by eight million people every day.
"This is about our readers getting involved in discussion with the man who's third in line to the throne, it's as simple as that."
Industry figures put the media's hitherto reluctance to publish down to the fallout from last year's phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World, which sparked the judge-led Leveson Inquiry into press ethics.
But some newspapers complained that they had been gagged by the royal family.
The Daily Mail said lawyers for Harry's father Prince Charles had threatened legal action against British papers which published the photographs, even though they were freely available online, making "a mockery of our privacy laws".

NASA's Curiosity studies Mars surroundings, nears drive
ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has been investigating the Martian weather around it and the soil beneath it, as its controllers prepare for the car-size vehicle's first drive on Mars.
The rover's weather station, provided by Spain, checks air temperature, ground temperature, air pressure, wind and other variables every hour at the landing site in Gale Crater. On a typical Martian day, or "sol," based on measurements so far in the two-week old mission, air temperatures swing from 28 degrees to minus 103 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 to minus 75 Celsius). Ground temperatures change even more between afternoon and pre-dawn morning, from 37 degrees to minus 132 degrees Fahrenheit (3 to minus 91 Celsius).
"We will learn about changes from day to day and season to season," said Javier G?mez-Elvira of the Centro de Astrobiolog?a, Madrid, Spain, principal investigator for the suite of weather sensors called the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS).

One of the two sets of REMS wind sensors is not providing data. "One possibility is that pebbles lofted during the landing hit the delicate circuit boards on one of the two REMS booms," said Curiosity Deputy Project Scientist Ashwin Vasavada of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We will have to be more clever about using the remaining wind sensor to get wind speed and direction."
An instrument provided by Russia is checking for water bound into minerals in the top three feet (one meter) of soil beneath the rover. It employs a technology that is used in oil prospecting on Earth, but had never before been sent to another planet.
"Curiosity has begun shooting neutrons into the ground," said Igor Mitrofanov of Space Research Institute, Moscow, principal investigator for this instrument, called the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons, or DAN. "We measure the amount of hydrogen in the soil by observing how the neutrons are scattered, and hydrogen on Mars is an indicator of water."
The most likely hydrogen to be found in shallow ground of Gale Crater, near the Martian equator, is in hydrated minerals. These are minerals with water molecules, or related ions, bound into the crystalline structure of rocks. They can tenaciously retain water from a wetter past after all free water has gone.
Curiosity will soon have a different patch of ground beneath it. Today, the six-wheeled rover wiggled its four corner wheels side to side for the first time on Mars, as a test of the steering actuators on those wheels. This was critical preparation for Curiosity's first drive on Mars.
"Late tonight, we plan to send Curiosity the commands for doing our first drive tomorrow," said Curiosity Mission Manager Michael Watkins of JPL.
The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered Curiosity to Mars on Aug. 5, PDT (Aug. 6, EDT). In a two-year prime mission researchers are using the rover's 10 instruments to assess whether the selected study area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life and for preserving evidence about whether life has existed.
The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL, a division of Caltech.

A Spanish Springs family remains haunted by the recent, grisly backyard discovery of their beloved three pet dogs? bodies ? viciously killed by a coyote.
?It was nothing short of a crime scene,? Tiffany Crook said of finding her dogs deceased Aug. 10 in the family?s backyard. ?The hardest part for me is I was home. I heard nothing.
?This coyote left our house with a full belly, and our hearts broken,? she said. ?Our dogs were a part of our family.?
Tiffany and her husband, Stephen Crook, said they want the community to learn from their tragedy and to take precautions against coyotes.
The couple thought the urban location of their home, their fenced backyard and the security of daylight were reliable safeguards against coyotes.
They were wrong.
?I know this won?t bring our dogs home but, if we can make someone keep a close eye on their pet or small children, our dogs? deaths weren?t in vain,? Tiffany Crook said.
The deaths of the Crooks? pugs, Henry and Emma, and Ellie, a Brussels Griffon, were among 13 dog deaths reported as coyote killings in Sparks during the last three weeks, said Jack Spencer Jr., supervisory wildlife biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Wildlife Services.
More have been reported maimed in coyote attacks, he said, but reports in Reno were not known or had not been made.
?If you live in downtown Reno, you probably don?t have to be worried,? Spencer said of coyotes. ?But if you live on the fringe of wetland habitat areas, like the edge of a golf course or waterway, that?s where they?re going to be traveling.?
Wildlife experts caution that coyotes can jump over backyard fences and eat small dogs who are left unattended. There have also been reports in the Lake Tahoe area of coyotes snatching dogs who were leashed during walks with their owners, biologists said. And while coyotes are known for coming out at night, they have been striking during daylight hours.
Coyote awareness, and eliminating food sources for the hungry, opportunist predators ? such as not leaving dogs and cats alone in yards ? will help prevent attacks on family pets.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Craig Breslow thought about the first all-Yale battery in the major leagues in 125 years and couldn't resist a pun about catcher Ryan Lavarnway.
"I guess Ryan caught like a bulldog," he said.
It was quite a day for "Boola Boola" at Yankee Stadium, when Breslow relieved in the eighth inning for the Boston Red Sox and helped preserve the lead in a 4-1 win over New York.
"We didn't need to put any signs down. We're all on the same wavelength," Breslow joked.
With the Red Sox leading 3-1, Breslow came in and threw a ball and then got Robinson Cano to ground a cutter into an inning-ending double play.
"He knew exactly what he wanted to do and executed," Lavarnway said.
According to STATS LLC and baseballreference.com, the only previous all-Yale battery was Sept. 15, 1883, when the Philadelphia Athletics' Jack Jones pitched to Al Hubbard. The Red Sox said they had been talking with Yale in recent days and had not yet been able to confirm that.
Breslow, a molecular biophysics and biochemistry major, is a 2002 Yale graduate. Lavarnway, a philosophy major, left after his junior year in 2008 to turn pro.
"I got a lot smarter having them out there," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "I don't talk to those guys. Bres is such a competitive kid, you wouldn't think that he carries those kind of degrees around with him."
Breslow thought of a way to add to the brainy battery and make it a real Mensa matchup.
"I guess if we could have had, I don't know maybe Wil Venable at the plate or something like that, it would have put the finishing touches on the matchup," he said, referring to the San Diego outfielder who is a 2005 Princeton graduate.
Breslow, 32, was a 26th-round draft pick by Milwaukee and is in his second stint with Boston following stops with San Diego (2005), the Red Sox (2006), Cleveland (2008), Minnesota (2008-09), Oakland (2009-11) and Arizona (2012). He has a 14-17 career record with a 3.00 ERA.
Lavarnway, 25, was a sixth-round selection in 2008 and made his major league debut with the Red Sox last year. He has a .179 average with two homers and eight RBIs in 67 career at-bats.
"I've gotten more congratulations about them than I ever got about myself," Yale baseball coach John Stuper, a former big league pitcher, said in a telephone interview. "Ryan will tell you it was because they had black-and-white television back then."
Not quite. He pitched for St. Louis and Cincinnati from 1982-85, winning a World Series title with the Cardinals.
"I'm gushing. It was a thrill," said Stuper, Yale's coach since 1993. "I'm going to the game tomorrow."
While in the minors, Breslow remembered traveling from Pawtucket, R.I., to nearby Providence to watch Lavarnway's Yale team play against Brown. Breslow has tried to be a mentor.
"I definitely look at him first as a baseball player, second as a friend and third as a Yale alumni," Lavarnway said. "He's been great to me since before I got drafted, coming back and kind of talking to me, making the transition into pro ball and starting his foundation and stuff."
Breslow's sister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 14 and in 2008 he founded The Strike 3 Foundation to raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer research.
Stuper said Lavarnway keeps returning to Yale to visit kids he worked with in the Big Brother program.
"Character off the charts. Work ethic off the charts," Stuper said.

Iconic Darwin finch genome sequenced
ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2012) ? Scientists have sequenced the genome of one of the iconic Galapagos finches first described by Charles Darwin. The genome of the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis) is among the first of a planned 100 genomes of vertebrate species to be sequenced and released by an international collaboration between the Genome 10K project and BGI.
This finch genome, the first of the BGI-Genome 10K collaboration to be made available through the UCSC Genome Browser, represents both a scientific and a symbolic advancement, according to Duke University associate professor Erich Jarvis, who studies the neurobiology of vocal learning in songbirds.
"The scientific advancement," Jarvis said, "is that it will allow us to investigate the genomes of a group of closely related species with a significant amount of diversity on an island population, allowing us to potentially better understand the genetics of trait evolution."
Jarvis added, "It is symbolic because it was the diversity of phenotypes in these finches that contributed to Darwin's theory of evolution."
Endemic to the subtropical or tropical dry forests and shrublands of the Galapagos Islands, this species evolves rapidly in response to environmental changes.
The BGI's associate director of research, Goujie Zhang, said, "These finches are of great historical significance, but when Darwin first studied these birds, he was unlikely to have envisioned how this species would become a perfect model to study evolution in action."
Zhang said, "Having the reference genome of this species has opened the door for carrying out studies that can look at real-time evolutionary changes on a genomic level of all of these enigmatic species."
Jarvis said this new genome will help us understand the evolution of vocal learning, "The availability of the Geospiza fortis will allow us to validate findings so far only found in the zebra finch genome."
Jarvis said these include genes with positively selected mutations involved with the vocal learning trait in finches and also with behavior necessary for spoken language in humans.
Jarvis added that the medium ground finch has several song types, whereas the zebra finch "is a more stereotyped vocal learning species." This difference is expected to be under genetic control.
Adding richness to the possibility of understanding the genomic components of vocal learning, researchers have been recording Geospiza songs over the last 40 years.
Jarvis said these recordings reveal dialectic patterns that can now be linked to the genome by sequencing the genomes of additional individuals from living and past populations. "Like human spoken language, Geospiza song dialects are stable over many generations, but can change with emigration."
"Having the well assembled draft reference genome of one individual will now allow scientists to determine if this cultural evolution is partly affected by genetics or is all pure cultural transmission," Jarvis added.
In addition to being useful for investigating speciation, the genomic data can help in conservation efforts, Zhang said. "They also serve as the base for population studies that will aid in the conservation of these renowned finches. BGI is looking forward to working with any collaborators interested in joining us to carry out this work."
Zhang said the medium ground finch genome, which is nearly one-third the size of the human genome, was sequenced from an individual female, producing a high-quality draft using 115X coverage data from the Illumina HiSeq sequencing system, which is considered a "next-generation" technology. With the aid of transcriptome data, BGI was able to annotate 16,286 protein-coding genes in this genome.
Professor Jun Wang, Executive Director of BGI, indicated the groups acted to spur the most rapid access and use of these data and to enable and encourage pre-publication use.
For that reason, in addition to releasing the medium ground finch genome on the UCSC Genome Browser, BGI has openly released the genome in their GigaScience journal's database, GigaDB, which makes data available in a citable format and hosts it under a CC0 license that provides the least restrictions possible for data use.
According to Genome 10K co-founder Stephen O'Brien, "The genome sequence empowerment of Darwin's finches will initiate the solving of evolutionary riddles that have puzzled biologists for a century." O'Brien is now chief scientific officer and director of the Dobzhansky Center for Genome Bioinformatics at St. Petersburg State University, Russia.
Oliver Ryder, director of genomics at the San Diego Zoo, placed the new genome in a larger context: "The availability of this high quality genome assembly produced by BGI will facilitate the stewardship of earth's biodiversity -- a cherished goal of Genome10K."

Twenty-seven up, 27 down. Again.
Seattle's Felix Hernandez threw Major League Baseball's third perfect game of the season Wednesday - a record - joining San Francisco's Matt Cain and the White Sox's Philip Humber, who also tossed his gem at Safeco Field.
That means six of the 23 perfectos in baseball history have come since 2009. Little wonder this is being called the Decade of the Pitcher.
Still not impressed? It gets better. Hernandez's gem was the sixth no-hitter this season. One more and major league pitchers will have tied the seven set in 1990 and matched a season later.
There's only been one year with eight no-hitters. Want to guess? Here's a hint: Chester Arthur was president.
That season was 1884.

TALENT ON THE MOUND:
Headlines these days are more likely going to be made by a Jered Weaver or Johan Santana than a slugger, and rightly so. Pitchers are getting the best of the matchups again. Starting with 1995, the heart of the Steroids Era, the best three years for earned-run average are 2010-2012 - it's 4.21 this year, third best, according to STATS LLC. Led by hard-throwing Justin Verlander and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, hurlers have a strikeouts/9 innings ratio over seven (7.09) for the first time since `95, STATS says.

We mean the call that goes a pitcher's way - i.e. Carlos Beltran's ball ruled foul but TV replays showed it clearly landed on the left field line in Santana's no-hitter. Or that impossible-seeming play: Cain got two. Mike Baxter made a bone-jarring catch to preserve Santana's no-hitter in June, slamming into the wall during a play that landed him on the disabled list. Everyone can use a little luck now and then.

DRUGS:
The suspension of Melky Cabrera on Wednesday shows the system is working. The gaudy numbers of the Steroids Era are gone, and while hitters weren't the only ones cheating, pitchers appear to be getting more benefit from a return to a level playing field. With big boppers not nearly as readily available these days, emphasis has shifted away from the long ball - except in New York - and pitchers have reasserted themselves at the top of the game.

Olympic Viewing: Carillo's wild Bond ride
The ride probably shaved a few weeks off Mary Carillo's life, but the look of sheer terror on her face as James Bond's Aston Martin briefly went airborne during a high-speed run through the English countryside is worth the agony. At least for viewers.
It was part of her immersion into all things Bond for a feature scheduled to air Sunday in NBC's prime time. She visits a warehouse filled with props from years of Bond movies, sees a tailor to get the secrets of the Bond look and learns how to make a cocktail "shaken, not stirred."
Sports purists may grumble, but the slice of life features about Olympic host countries provided by Carillo and Jimmy Roberts are usually a welcome diversion in NBC's coverage. Between the events and the apparent need to showcase Ryan Seacrest, they've been mostly missing from London, although NBC promises that will change during the second week.
On the flip side of her Bond feature, Carillo also goes bog snorkeling in Wales. We're not sure what that is, but it doesn't sound as glamorous.
"It's nice to have relief from all of the sports," said Carillo, whose non-British specific feature on the old Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut aired Sunday morning. "You want to remind people of where you are and what the history and the culture are all about."
Carillo, who also anchors NBC's late-night coverage, said she'd prepared about 20 features for the London Games.
"My stories are landing in different incarnations at different lengths," she said.
LIVE TIME: NBC has its share of critics for an often formulaic, tape-delayed prime-time broadcast, but the weekend offered a chance for viewers to catch the fun smorgasbord of live material available during the daytime. Early risers Sunday could catch the women's marathon on NBC, the Williams sisters winning the doubles gold in tennis on the NBC Sports cable network, then the Andy Murray-Roger Federer match for gold in singles on NBC.
MAC ATTACK: John McEnroe is a welcome addition to the NBC team, and you can see his role expanding in future Olympics. He's refreshingly candid. Did you expect anything else? When Ted Robinson noted with a certain disdain the pop music played over the loudspeaker at Wimbledon, McEnroe was enthusiastic. "What a perfect opportunity to add more spice to the event," he said, adding that the Wimbledon crowd is often too polite.
OUCH: Tim Hutchings' comment about American marathon runner Shalane Flanagan, as she knelt on all fours in obvious pain after finishing her race, probably didn't come out the way he intended. "That's giving 100 percent," Hutchings said. "Shalane Flanagan there, unable to stand. Isn't that great?"
UPCOMING: The men's 400-meter and 400-meter hurdles finals are on Monday's docket, along with men's gymnastics individual competitions.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Andy Murray had Centre Court rocking Sunday, winning gold for the home team and beating Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the tennis final at Wimbledon.
The result was a royal rout. Murray swept nine consecutive games, breaking Federer's serve four times in a row.
The victory marked a breakthrough for the Scotsman, who has lost all four of his Grand Slam finals, three against Federer.
For Federer, the drubbing marked another Olympic disappointment. Playing in the games for the fourth time, he sought a victory to complete a career Golden Slam but still earned his first singles medal.
From the start, there was no doubting spectators' loyalty. The retractable Centre Court roof opened shortly before the final, and Federer walked onto the sun-splashed grass to a standing ovation. Then Murray entered, and the roar tripled.
At the far end of the All England Club, thousands of happy fans with grounds passes enjoyed a carnival atmosphere on the picnic hill known as Murray Mount while watching the match on a huge video screen.
Federer wore red and Murray blue in the most colorful tournament ever held at Wimbledon. Their tactics were also in sharp contrast.
Murray returned aggressively to repeatedly put on Federer on the defensive when serving. Federer tried to come forward more than in any match this summer, but Murray answered with a succession of crisp passing shots for winners.
The fans loved it, waving Union Jacks of all sizes. "An-dy! An-dy" they chanted. They applauded when Federer won a point, but they roared when Murray won one.
And the bounces seemed to go Murray's way. One of his service breaks came when he hit winners that clipped the net cord on consecutive points. But then the net, after all, was British.
Federer showed little frustration as the match slipped away. Instead, it was Murray tossing his racket in the second set when he made a rare error.
Otherwise, the usually dour Scotsman had little to get upset about. When he netted an easy forehand on break point early in the match, he laughed at his mistake.
Murray won with plenty of flair and a succession of spectacular shots. A lunging backhand pass in the corner had fans on their feet. And he erased a break point with an acrobatic leaping overhead, followed by an improbable reflex volley winner after Federer fired at him from point-blank range.
Murray fell behind 15-40 serving in the opening game but rallied to hold, and from 2-all he took charge, winning every game until 5-0 in the second set.
Federer struggled to hold but had his chances to break, including in the third game of the second set. He held six break points but Murray erased them all and won the game on the 20th point on an errant Federer backhand, one of many.

A tiny spider discovered recently in Australia has been named after British TV naturalist Sir David Attenborough.
The species - prethopalpus attenboroughi - is a little over a milimetre in length and found only on Horn Island off northern Queensland.
It is not the first time Sir David has been recognised like this - a fossil of a fish that lived 380 million years ago was named materpiscis attenboroughi.
The broadcaster said he was honoured by his name being used with the arachnid.
'Biggest of compliments'In an acceptance speech in Perth, Western Australia, Sir David said about his new namesake: "I take it that it is careful in its judgement, merciless, certainly beautiful and I will treasure it and I thank you very much indeed for this.

CRANBROOK, BC and HIGH RIVER, AB, Aug. 1, 2012 /CNW/ ? The largest sports and entertainment venue in the Kootenays has a new name.? Today, the Cranbrook RecPlex became Western Financial Place, in recognition of the facility?s new sponsor, Western Financial Group (Western).
Western?an insurance and financial services company based in Alberta?won naming rights for the next 10 years and plans to work with the City of Cranbrook, the facility operators, and the company?s regional partner, Falkins Insurance Group (Falkins), to build on the longstanding tradition of providing the residents of Cranbrook and surrounding areas a first-class destination for entertainment, recreation, and community involvement.
The 10-year partnership agreement, including naming rights and other sponsorship and usage commitments, totals $750,000, including an advance of $500,000.
?We?re delighted to make a commitment of this magnitude to the people of Cranbrook and the Kootenays,? said Western Financial Group CEO Scott Tannas. ?Our company is rooted in the values that westerners cherish, and we intend to be a part of this terrific city and region for a long time to come.?

The complex, which opened October 13, 2000, has a lap and wave pool, racquet ball/squash courts, an ice rink that?s home to the Kootenay Ice Western Hockey League team, and hosts world class events, such as the upcoming Bob Dylan concert.
Western Financial Place signage will be unveiled on the building and ice later this summer, and the Falkins Group will participate in sponsorship and branding opportunities throughout the building.? As part of its succession plan, Falkins has begun the process of joining Western Financial Group.
