Less well-off people often have their cancer diagnosed too late, say experts

Research by King's College London studied 14 different forms of the illness in England and concluded that people from poorer areas are dying unnecessarily.

The link between poverty and cancer is already well-established, but the study has calculated the numbers of patients who may survive in a more equal society.

Report author and epidemiologist Margareet Luchtenborg told Sky News: "We have now identified that the difference in survival between the most affluent and people from more deprived areas occurs very early after diagnosis.

"We really need to zoom in on the issues driving this."

We know that people from deprived areas are more likely to smoke or be very overweight. They are also less likely to to be aware of signs and symptoms of cancer, probably leading to later diagnosis.

Lifestyle, diet, housing and wages have all been previously identified as factors that influence a person's health and chances of overcoming disease.

Chris Carrigan, head of the National Cancer Intelligence Network, said: "We know that people from deprived areas are more likely to smoke or be very overweight.

"They are also less likely to to be aware of signs and symptoms of cancer, probably leading to later diagnosis."

The Maggie's cancer support charity sees 80,000 visits to its centres around the UK every year.

Programme director Ann-Louise Ward told Sky News: "I think the report is shocking but the results are not surprising.

"I think there is always more that we can do to ensure that everyone has access to the right treatment and the right type of support to help them with the cancer experience."
