KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan policeman killed nine of his fellow officers as they lay sleeping in a village in the eastern Paktika province on Friday, police said, blaming the attack on the Taliban.
Provincial police chief Dawlat Khan Zadran said the incident took place in Yayakhil town of Yayakhil district.
Bowal Khan, chief of Yayakhil district, identified the gunman as Asadullah, who goes by one name. He said the gunman was assigned to a small command post when he woke up at 3 a.m. for guard duty. He then used his assault rifle to kill the nine men sleeping inside the post, took their weapons and piled them in a pickup truck.
According to Khan, Asadullah then sped away in the truck.
Khan said the victims included one of his brothers and the commander of the post, identified as Mohammad Ramazan. He said two of the dead were Ramazan's sons.
The motive for the killing was not known, but police in the area blamed the Taliban for the attack. Paktika is a stronghold of the Haqqani network, a Pakistani-based group with ties to the Taliban and al-Qaida. Although they mostly attack U.S.-led coalition forces, they have often carried out assaults and bombings against the Afghan army and police.
"This man is a coward. What he did is part of the Taliban conspiracy," Khan said.
Khan and Zadran said the killer's two brothers were being held for questioning.
The village police is also known as the Afghan Local Police, or ALP. It is a village-level force that provides security in areas where the Afghan army and police cannot.
The ALP is trained by the U.S. troops but commanded and run by the Afghan government and police.
In an unrelated incident, a motorcycle bomb parked by the side of a road exploded on Friday and killed an Afghan police officer and wounded another in Sangin district of southwest Helmand province, police said. They added that another police officer was shot and killed late Thursday outside his house in the capital of Helmand.
NATO said Friday that two of its service members were killed in southern Afghanistan. They said one died in a roadside bomb explosion on Friday and the other one in an insurgent attack that took place Thursday. NATO did not disclose any other details.
So far this year, 88 international troops have been killed in Afghanistan.

How glucose normally works
Glucose is the main source of energy in the body that makes up the muscles.
It comes from two major sources, the food we eat and the liver. During digestion sugar is absorbed into the blood. Sugar then enters the cells with the help of insulinAs the insulin circulates, it acts like a key unlocking the doors to allow sugar into the cells.
Insulin helps in lowering the amount of sugar in the blood. As the sugar levels in the blood drops, so does the secretion of insulin from the pancreas.o ?Causes of type 1 diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves the body with little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. Type 1 is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, though exactly what those factors are is still unclear.
o ?Causes of pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes
In type 2 diabetes the cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Instead of moving into the cells, sugar builds up in the bloodstream. The reason behind this is uncertain, although as in type 1 diabetes, it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of type 2. The development of type 2 diabetes is linked to being over weight, but not everyone with type 2 is overweight.
o ?Causes of gestational diabetes
At the time of pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones to sustain pregnancy. These hormones make the cells more resistant to insulin. As the placenta grows larger in the second and third trimesters, it secretes more of these hormones which make it even harder for insulin to do its job.

Federal health authorities have significantly raised their estimate of the prevalence of autism in children, concluding in a new study of 8-year-olds that 1 in 88 has some form of the disorder.
The analysis, based on a review of tens of thousands of health and school records in 14 states, was released yesterday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the latest in a series of studies showing autism rates climbing dramatically over the past decade. The previous estimate of the incidence of autism was 1 in 110.
Dr. Daniel Geschwind, an autism expert at UCLA, said he was initially surprised by the size of the increase ? 25 percent in two years. ?But when I looked at what seems to be driving it, it made total sense,? he said.
Geschwind and others said vast differences in the rates among states included in the study are almost certainly a reflection of social and cultural factors that influence who gets a diagnosis.
?Public awareness has gone up, and case identification has gotten better,? said Dr. Young-Shin Kim, an autism expert at Yale University.
In its first analysis, using data from 2000, it estimated that 1 in 150 children had some form of the disorder. By 2006, it was 1 in 110.
The latest estimate of 1 in 88, based on 2008 data, is already being touted as evidence that autism is an epidemic and that something in the environment is driving it.
Mark Roithmayr, president of the advocacy group Autism Speaks, called for more government funding for research and treatment.
?Inevitably, when these statistics come out, the question is, what is driving the increase?? said Roithmayr. Better diagnoses, broader diagnostic criteria and higher awareness account for about half the rise, he estimated.

Agreed. The Sun is just an incredibly large hot gas giant, not necessarily too different from Jupiter in many regards.
There are differences - magnetism plays a larger role since the Sun is made of plasma and not gas. There aren't too many objects in the solar system which can exert a tremendous gravitic influence on the Sun. Unlike Jupiter (or most planets, for that matter), the Sun's core is cooler than it's surface. The weather may have some different properties, but it's still weather.

STEVENSVILLE, Md. (AP) ? Nearly two months after he was found bloodied on the side of the road in Linthicum, Rocky Road has a new home and family.
The pit bull, whom county police believe was a ?bait dog? used to train fighting dogs, has been adopted by a family of four living in the Gibson?s Grant community on Kent Island. Sabrina Benko filed the paperwork with Columbia-based shelter Tara?s House this week, making the adoption official.
The adoption came six days after the Benkos?took the dog into their home to foster him for the shelter. So far, Rocky Road, whose name has been shortened to Rocky, has been spending a lot of time sleeping and cuddling, Benko said.
?What these people did to this dog has in no way defined him,? Benko said. ?It just amazes me how trusting he is of other people and other animals.?
Earlier this month, a second dog police believe also was being used for dogfighting was found in Brooklyn Park, within five miles from where Rocky was discovered Feb. 2. County Animal Control officers are investigating whether the two incidents are linked.
Benko, who owns and operates a dance studio, S Be Dance Complex of Crofton, and her husband James, a litigation consultant, have two daughters ? Nadia, 5, and Aida, 3.
Rocky is the second abused pit bull the Benkos have adopted. The first, Newman, was rescued from Baltimore 10 years ago.
Benko began following Rocky?s story after he was found.
?Just like everybody else I was feeling so sad and helpless,? Benko said. ?There was just something about him ? his face.?
Rocky suffered from wounds to his face, ears, head and one of his front legs. The dog was so badly injured animal control
officers considered euthanizing him.
But the staff at the Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital offered to treat Rocky for free.
It?s possible Rocky belonged to another family before he was abused, Katie Boring, the animal hospital?s office manager said.
?When people are searching for bait dogs, they?re looking for dogs that are calm, not going to fight back as much,? Boring said. ?People can get bait dogs from anywhere ? adopt them, buy them, steal them from yards.?
The animal hospital is taking care of the second dog that was found injured, named Princess by the hospital staff.
Like Rocky, Princess is affectionate. She had to undergo surgery to repair a wound under her front right leg. Princess will stay at the animal hospital as she recovers.
The Benko?s first dog is a regular patient at the animal hospital, and the staff said they will be excited to see Rocky in
the future as well, Boring said.
Inspired by Rocky?s story, Benko applied to become a foster? parent through Tara?s House. About a week later, the shelter called and asked if she would be interested in taking the pit bull.
Although the dog will bark at the occasional UPS truck driving by and bite at his tail, he has shown no aggression toward anyone, even the family?s other pit bull.
Rocky is very gentle with her daughters, Benko said. ?He?ll lay on the couch and the girls will come and lay right
on him,? she said. ?He?s a cuddler.?
In light of the two abused dog incidents, Sen. Bryan Simonaire, R-Pasadena, is spearheading emergency legislation in General Assembly that would increase penalties for those found guilty of baiting dogs. A Senate subcommittee meeting is scheduled for today.

Capsule for removing radioactive contamination from milk, fruit juices, other beverages
ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Amid concerns about possible terrorist attacks with nuclear materials, and fresh memories of environmental contamination from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, scientists have described the development of a capsule that can be dropped into water, milk, fruit juices and other foods to remove more than a dozen radioactive substances.
In a presentation at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), they said the technology could be used on a large scale by food processors or packaged into a small capsule that consumers at the home-kitchen level could pop into beverage containers to make them safe for consumption.
"We repurposed and repackaged for radioactive decontamination of water and beverages a tried-and-true process that originally was developed to mine the oceans for uranium and remove uranium and heavy metals from heavily contaminated water," said Allen Apblett, Ph.D., who led the research team. "The accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan and ongoing concerns about possible terrorist use of nuclear materials that may contaminate food and water led us to shift the focus of this technology."
The technology also can remove arsenic, lead, cadmium and other heavy metals from water and fruit juices, Apblett said, adding that higher-than-expected levels of some of those metals have been reported in the past in certain juices. He is with Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
Nanoparticles composed of metal oxides, various metals combined with oxygen, are the key ingredients in the process. The particles, so small that hundreds would fit on the period at the end of this sentence, react with radioactive materials and other unwanted substances and pull them out of solution. The particles can absorb all 15 of the so-called "actinide" chemical elements on the periodic table of the elements, as well as non-actinide radioactive metals (e.g., strontium), lead, arsenic and other non-radioactive elements.
The actinides all are radioactive metals, and they include some of the most dangerous substances associated with nuclear weapons and commercial nuclear power plant accidents like Fukushima. Among them are plutonium, actinium, curium and uranium.
In the simplest packaging of the technology, the metal-oxide nanoparticles would be packed inside a capsule similar to a medicine capsule, and then stirred around in a container of contaminated water or fruit juice. Radioactive metals would exit the liquid and concentrate inside the capsule. The capsule would be removed, leaving the beverage safe for consumption. In laboratory tests, it reduced the concentrations of these metals to levels that could not be detected, Apblett noted.
The technology is moving toward commercialization, with the first uses probably in purifying calcium dietary supplements to remove any traces of lead, cadmium and radiostrontium. Apblett said the capsule version could have appeal beyond protection against terrorist attacks or nuclear accidents, among consumers in areas with heavy metals in their water or food supplies, for instance.
The scientists acknowledged funding from the Oklahoma Economic Development Generating Excellence Program.

In Wisconsin, Romney links Santorum to 'big labor'

LACROSSE, Wis. (AP) ? Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney is attacking rival Rick Santorum as a friend of "big labor" as they campaign in Wisconsin, where a fight over labor unions is fueling a bitter recall effort aimed at Gov. Scott Walker.
Santorum, in turn, is aligning himself with the embattled Republican governor, a play for a party base that he hopes will carry him to victory in the GOP presidential primary on Tuesday.
"As you know the fight against big labor led by Gov. Walker isn't over, here in Wisconsin," a voice says in an automated Romney telephone call. "I was shocked to find out that Rick Santorum repeatedly supported big labor and joined with liberal Democrats in voting against right-to-work legislation during his time in Washington."
Romney, with help from a well-funded allied group, is pointing to union-friendly votes by the former Pennsylvania senator. His swing back from confronting President Barack Obama to attacking his main GOP rival comes as a Marquette University poll shows him overtaking Santorum in Wisconsin by an 8-point margin, 39-31.
In Michigan and Ohio, Romney criticized Santorum's 1996 Senate vote against so-called right-to-work legislation, which provides that people cannot be compelled to join a union as a condition of employment. The recession has hit hard in both states, and labor unions are unpopular with Republican primary voters there.
Wisconsin is Santorum's last chance to keep alive his claim that he can go toe-to-toe with Obama in the industrial heartland. Romney edged Santorum in Michigan and Ohio and soundly beat him in Illinois last week.
The pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future is spending $2.3 million on television ads attacking Santorum and added a spot this week mentioning his right-to-work vote.
Santorum has said as a candidate for president that he supports a national right-to-work bill, and that he opposed it in the Senate because he didn't want to undermine Pennsylvania's opposition to the policy. Santorum represented southwestern Pennsylvania in the House for two terms and then won two terms in the Senate from the strong union state. Romney supports national right-to-work legislation.
"Calling Rick Santorum a friend of labor is like calling Mitt Romney a conservative. Neither are true," Santorum told reporters Wednesday.
Organized labor and Democratic critics targeted Walker, a Republican elected in 2010, after he won approval last year in the GOP-controlled Legislature to effectively end collective bargaining for public employees. Campaigns for and against Walker have consumed months of television advertising and have overshadowed Tuesday's presidential primary.
Republican National Committee member Mary Buestin of Mequon, Wis., said GOP activists are lining up with Walker, and said any hint of waffling on union issues is not good for a presidential candidate.
"I think when people find out he voted that way, even if he has come around since then, it will hurt Santorum," said Buestin, who lives in a GOP-heavy Milwaukee suburb.
University of Wisconsin political science professor Charles Franklin, who conducted the Marquette poll, said GOP sentiment is heavily anti-union.
"The GOP primary electorate is very positive toward Scott Walker. So anything that differentiates a candidate and puts space between them and Walker is not good for the primary coming up," Franklin said.
Santorum worked vigorously this week to endear himself to supporters of Walker, who is locked in a tight battle to retain the governorship.
"Gov. Walker ... is leading. He is leading this country with his courage, his ability," Santorum said in Bellevue, Wis. "He is willing to stand up and fight the bullies. I come from southwest Pennsylvania. I represented the old steel valley of Pittsburgh. I know what it's like."
Outspent roughly 4-1 in the state by Romney and his allies, Santorum needs to rally Walker supporters to his side to have hope of prevailing in Wisconsin.
Aides to Romney noted how he campaigned for Walker ahead of the 2010 election, as well as Republican senators also targeted in the recall, including his state campaign chairwoman, state Sen. Alberta Darling.
Santorum has won a string of caucuses and primaries in the South and Midwest, where his socially conservative profile has appealed to evangelical conservatives more than Romney's more moderate, economic-focused message.
Santorum campaigned in conservative western Wisconsin on Wednesday and planned to return Friday.
Romney was planning to make his first campaign trip to Wisconsin on Friday. He talked for 30 minutes to thousands of Wisconsin voters in a telephone conference call Wednesday.
During the call Romney joked about an awkward familiarity with the state, where his father, as president of American Motors, moved all production. Later, when running for governor of Michigan, the elder Romney was walking in a parade where the marching band only knew the University of Wisconsin fight song.
"So every time they would start playing 'On, Wisconsin! On Wisconsin!' my dad's political people would jump up and down and try to get them to stop," Romney recalled with a chuckle.
The Democratic National Committee later accused Romney of joking about closing the Michigan motor plant.
