USF Bulls to host 2015 NCAA golf in Bradenton

By JOEY JOHNSTON | The Tampa Tribune

The University of South Florida was named host school for the 2015 NCAA men's and women's golf championships, which will be played at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton.

Dates will be announced later. The NCAA last held its men's event in Florida in 1990, while the women's event visited the state in 2007.

The NCAA also announced its tournaments will air on the Golf Channel beginning in 2015, marking the first time in 18 years the women's tournament will be covered on live television.

Concession Golf Club was named the best new private course of 2006 by Golf Digest magazine, which named it the 65th toughest course in America this year. The 18-hole, par-72, 7,474-yard course was designed by Jack Nicklaus in association with Tony Jacklin.

The name was derived from the 1969 Ryder Cup, when Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin. The gesture, known as "the concession,'' put the Ryder Cup into a tie for the first time and was considered an act of great sportsmanship.

"It's a great representation of how important golf is to this community and the direction of our golf programs,'' USF athletic director Doug Woolard said.

USF was the host school for the 1999 men's final four and the 2008 women's final four in basketball, along with the 2009 NCAA volleyball championships. Additionally, USF hosted men's basketball events in 1983, 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2011, plus the 1990 men's soccer final four.

The NCAA championships are a "natural fit'' for the Tampa Bay area, USF men's golf coach Chris Malloy said. Bulls women's golf coach Marci Kornegay said the events will help USF's recruiting and exposure.

"We will have the opportunity to show off all the attributes this area has to offer young golfers,'' Kornegay said. "The tournament will be played at one of the premiere golf clubs in America. It's no wonder that the NCAA has decided to place its championships here.''
