Weiss Construction stated: The goal of this project was to take an old 1906 stone home that had been illegally turned into a multifamily unit back into a single family home that met the LEED Platinum / NAHB Emerald standards. We did this by focusing on health, energy efficiency, comfort, water efficiency, environmental friendly materials/ construction and durability planning.
We were able to increase energy efficiency by more than 200 percent and we also reduced air leakage. This home has achieved NAHB Green Building Program Emerald, and LEED Platinum status. We also increased the water efficiency by 100 percent. All of the ductwork was removed and new ductwork was installed.
The challenges with the project is that this building was in complete disrepair and was unsafe to enter. We gutted the entire home, and basically built a new house within the old 14-inch stone masonry walls. Another challenge was the budget, which we were able to work with and still achieve a very high level certification.
This home has been brought back to life through a complete gut rehab done to a high level green building standard and it focused on all areas of LEED for Homes in order to achieve the highest level. Being able to make these changes with a restricted budget makes it all the more a great case study into what can be done to an old building in terms of energy efficiency and health.
